Tire Repair

A primary factor contributing to tire failure and casing rejection in the retreading process is an improper or flawed repair job.

When designing tire maintenance programs, this aspect is frequently underestimated by fleets. However, according to a recent survey featured in the monthly magazine Tire Business, 46% of tire failures can be attributed to inadequately performed repair procedures.

Naturally, this results in increased tire expenses.

In cases where a radial tire has sustained damage to the extent that the steel cords are exposed to external elements, it is critical to initiate repairs promptly to prevent moisture from infiltrating the belt package, which could lead to additional harm.

The plug and patch repair method is highly efficient for addressing nail holes measuring 1/4 inch in diameter. The plug prevents moisture infiltration, while the inner patch reinforces the plug’s integrity. However, for larger damages exceeding 3/8 inch in size, it is advisable to retire the tire from service. Implementing this repair technique not only minimizes tire failures but also fosters casing recovery, ultimately saving costs and extending the tire’s lifespan.
